This illustration based on a drawing of battlefield “predators” [Raubtiere] by Herbert König was published in the popular family journal Die Gartenlaube shortly after the Battle of Königgrätz (July 3, 1866). It accompanied an article that expressed outrage at the plundering of corpses by the Czech population in this area of Austria. The facial expressions and features of the plundering locals in contrast to the “heroically” fallen soldier and the injured Prussian soldier pleading with them are indicative of the author’s attitude towards the Czech population of this region of the Austrian Empire.
