Abstract

This early photograph by F. Jamrath & Sohn, Berlin, shows the ceremonial reception by Kaiser Wilhelm I of victorious Prussian troops. The troops and their horses appear blurred because their movement could not be captured on the wet photographic plates used at that time. The crispness of other parts of the image, however, suggests what a static affair the occasion actually was.

Archival note: This is an early example of a snapshot in which the moving subjects are out of focus because the wet photographic plates required a longer exposure time.
