An early example of photographic reportage, this image contrasts starkly with Anton von Werner’s oil painting A Billet outside Paris. Here, we see an honorary delegation of German troops at Versailles. The proclamation of Prussian King Wilhelm I as German Emperor [Kaiser] took place the same day.
