Frans Hogenberg’s image of the attempted assassination of Admiral Gaspard de Coligny, a Huguenot (Protestant) leader on 18 August 1572 and scenes of the St. Bartholomew’s Day massacre that followed, depicts the scale and brutality of the violence. Hogenberg’s engraving brought to life the religious conflicts of the French Wars of Religion and demonstrates the significance of the events beyond France as Europe grappled with religious division and its consequences.
