Gregor Aichinger’s work reflects the turn from Renaissance to early Baroque in German music. Born in Regensburg c. 1565, the composer spent most of his working life in the wealthy imperial city of Augsburg. The city’s dominant merchant and banking family, the Fuggers, sponsored and promoted his career. An ordained priest, Aichinger was an active proponent of the Catholic reform, evident in his many musical settings of Marian chants. This composition for four voices, Regina coeli, celebrates Mary as queen of Heaven and mother of the risen Christ and offers a good example of the classic vocal style of this transition period.
