Abstract

The organist and composer Erasmus Widmann (1572–1634) came from the imperial city of Schwäbisch Hall and initially worked for several years as an organist in Styria, Austria. With the expulsion of Protestants there, the Protestant Widmann was forced to leave Styria and return to his hometown. From 1602 to 1613, he was court organist and director of music at the court of Count Wolfgang II of Hohenlohe in Weikersheim and thereafter held a position as preceptor and cantor in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The compositions here are from Widmann's Musikalischer Tugendspiegel [Musical Model of Virtue], 1613.
