Abstract

The organist and composer Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654) lived and worked in Halle/Saale. In 1609 he became court organist to the Margrave of Brandenburg. He compiled a collection of works for keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord and clavichord) published under the title Tabulatura nova in 1624. An example from this collection can be heard here. Scheidt went on to publish several more collections of instrumental and vocal music, although he lost his position and eventually all of his possessions in the wake of the Thirty Years' War.
