Abstract

This is a very early portrait of Martin Luther as an Augustinian friar with tonsure and habit. Like many of the Luther images in circulation at the time, this woodcut is based on a portrait by Lucas Cranach the Elder. It appeared on the title page of Babylonian Captivity of the Church, one of Luther’s three great pamphlets of 1520.
