Abstract

The Nazi regime regarded homosexual men as enemies of the people, since their “unnatural sex acts” and “refusal to procreate” supposedly endangered the nation’s survival. The allegedly infectious “social epidemic” of homosexuality was to be completely eradicated. As an initial step toward this goal, the Nazis forced the widespread closure of gay and lesbian institutions. This news article from the March 4, 1933, edition of the Berliner Tageblatt lists the names of addresses of various Berlin night clubs closed by decree of the city’s chief of police.
