Abstract

Hitler appeared in public after every foreign and domestic political success. This photograph shows him delivering a speech to a large crowd in Vienna on the day after the annexation [Anschluss] of Austria. It was only toward the end of 1943, when the German war effort began deteriorating, that Hitler withdrew from the public sphere.
