Abstract

The town of Eisenhüttenstadt was founded as a socialist model city in 1950 (initially named Stalinstadt). It was named after a new steel mill combine located west of the historic town. For decades, the combine was the largest employer of the region. This news segment shows scenes from the smelting process. In 1959, Eisenhüttenstadt marked a milestone by smelting 100,000 tons of pig iron per month for the first time. The ironworkers at the “Philipp Müller” blast furnace were presented with flowers to mark the occasion.
