Abstract
On December 17, 1954, the Bundestag in Bonn voted to allow all women to use the form of address “Frau” instead of “Fräulein” in official communications, regardless of their marital status. The motion was passed with four votes against and five abstentions. The women's rights activist and MP for the FDP, Marie-Elisabeth Lüders, had long campaigned for this step towards equality for unmarried women.
