Abstract

Clothing, dance styles, and musical tastes followed American trends in the 1950s. This photograph shows a dance event at “Die Badewanne” [“The Bathtub”] on Nürnberger Straße in West Berlin. The fact that couples danced apart was initially cause for concern among commentators in both East and West Germany. Also concerning was the fact that these new dances required women, and sometimes men, to whirl through the air.
