Abstract

This image, created by Austrian artist Anton Spreng, depicts a man enjoying a meal of bread and sausage. His physical appearance, as much as his clothing and diet, situate him as a peasant. While this peasant’s meager repast shows that hunger was still a major problem in eighteenth-century Germany, new nutrient-dense crops were rapidly being included in the diets of Germans; Frederick the Great of Prussia famously introduced the potato to his kingdom during his reign.
