Abstract

The oil crisis in 1973 and the associated rise in energy prices caused a dramatic economic recession in the Federal Republic. The poor overall economic situation and massive industrial job losses—largely due to the transition to a service society and the onset of globalization—led to a huge spike in unemployment.
