Abstract

Until the mid-1960s, most guest workers came from the Mediterranean region, mainly Italy. Later, they came mostly from Turkey. Shown here are Turkish guest workers in their modest commnunal quarters at 35 Münchener Straße in Frankfurt am Main in January 1969. In 1973, rising unemployment and the recession that followed in the wake of the first oil crisis led to a recruitment ban. Photo by Abisag Tüllmann.
