Abstract

With the “Rock for Peace” music festival, organized annually by the East German state from 1982 to 1987, SED youth officials and members of the rock scene forged an agreement based on the lowest common denominator: anxiety about survival in the face of a possible nuclear war. The festival quickly devolved into a hollow ritual with system-conformist political songs and contrived ceremonies, prompting more and more GDR bands to abstain from participating. This photo shows Tamara Danz, singer of the rock band “Silly,” at one such peace concert in the Palace of the Republic in East Berlin in 1986.
