Potsdamer Platz in Berlin was the most trafficked crossroads in Europe in the 1920s. At the hub of five major roads, Potsdamer Platz saw an average of 2,753 vehicles an hour in 1928, according to an official count. In 1924, the city's first traffic light had been installed on the elliptical central island in the center of Potsdamer Platz. It was not greeted with universal approval. One newspaper called for its immediate destruction; another called it a “fool’s play.”
