Born in Galicia, actress Elisabeth Bergner (1897-1986) became one of the biggest starts of stage and screen in the Weimar Republic. She and her husband, director Paul Czinner, fled Germany after the Nazis came to power since they were both Jewish. They emigrated first to London and eventually to Hollywood. This photo was taken by portrait photographer Wanda von Debschitz-Kunowski.
