The conspiracy to remove Kurt von Schleicher from the chancellorship played out in a series of meetings between Hitler and Franz von Papen in December 1932 and January 1933. Papen, a member of Hindenburg’s inner circle, was seeking to reprise his role as chancellor, while Hitler wanted to make use of Papen’s influence with Hindenburg to secure the chancellorship for himself. Joachim von Ribbentrop (1893-1946) was enlisted to arrange a meeting between Hitler and Papen at Ribbentrop’s Berlin residence. Ribbentrop, a wealthy wine merchant who had met Papen in Turkey during World War I, had joined the Nazi party in May 1932 and immediately put himself at the disposal of the party leadership. One of the party’s most sycophantic hardliners, he would go on to become Hitler’s foreign minister. After the Second World War, he was tried in Nuremberg, found guilty of war crimes and executed.
