Sport appealed to broad sectors of the population and sometimes enjoyed government sponsorship. Thus, the name of a team could occasionally be construed as an indirect political statement. In the photograph below, the final man on the winning team – which, incidentally, was named after Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia – crosses the finish line in a relay race. This race ended in Berlin’s Tiergarten park at the famous Victory Column, which can be seen here in the background.
