Bismarck was celebrated by nationalists for his role in unifying Germany. This photograph was taken in 1891 in the Bavarian spa town of Bad Kissingen, which Bismarck had been visiting for health reasons since 1876. Several student fraternities, who were in town for a memorial celebration of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, honored Bismarck (seen here with his Great Dane) with a performance of the song “Die Wacht am Rhein” [The Watch on the Rhine]. The anecdote is an example of how Bismarck remained a symbol of German nationalism in the Wilhelmine period despite his forced resignation in 1890.
