According to the rules of warfare, enemy prisoners of war had to be interned. This photo by Scottish war photographer David McLellan shows thousands of German prisoners of war in a fenced-in prison camp in France. They had been taken prisoner by the British army in August 1918. Since POW camps behind the front lines were often improvised and overcrowded and food supply was limited, the conditions in these camps were usually miserable.
