On June 17, 1996, with the support of Chancellor Helmut Kohl, civil rights activist Bärbel Bohley founded the Bürgerbüro e.V. [the Citizens’ Office (a registered society)] in Berlin. The society is devoted to reappraising the damage inflicted by the SED dictatorship. The office continues to work today on behalf of those who suffered from the arbitrary misdeeds of the SED regime. It also strives to increase public awareness of the contributions of those who made sacrifices for freedom and human rights during the GDR dictatorship. This photo shows an employee of the Citizens’ Office counseling a victim of the SED dictatorship.
