The foreign policy of the Federal Republic under Konrad Adenauer was determined by the primacy of Westbindung, or ties to the West. For the Federal Republic, this meant tight relations with the Western European states, strong economic ties with the newly founded European Economic Community (EEC), and close political relations with the United States.
