Between 1978 and 1985, the Federal Ministry for Education and Research conducted a pilot program on “opening up industrial and technical occupations to girls.” The program focused on jobs in which the percentage of women was less than 5% (1978). Overall, 1,232 young women participated in the program in 21 locations and then started their professional training in 217 companies and professional training schools. The German Postal Service, one third of whose employees were  women at the time (1981), also participated in the program and trained women as telecommunications technicians.
