Abstract

During the 1960s, beat music and rock ‘n’ roll, once the rallying point of a youthful minority, became part of a commercially mediated West German mass culture that increasingly infiltrated all forms of mainstream media. “Der Beat Club,” moderated by architecture student Uschi Nerke and a changing cast of male co-presenters (pictured here: British DJ Dave Lee Travis) , was one of the most popular youth shows of the 1960s.
