Since 1857, the Catholic Feast of St. Hildegard [Hildegardisfest] has been celebrated annually in Eibingen, an abbey located on the Rhine River about 20 miles west of Wiesbaden, on September 17, the feast day of St. Hildegard of Bingen and the anniversary of her death in 1179. Hildegard of Bingen (b. 1098) was a Benedictine nun who became famous during her lifetime for writing down her religious visions. She also wrote religious poetry, works on natural history and medicine, and composed liturgical music. The press photographer Georg Pahl took this photo at the 1929 ceremonies of the Feast of St. Hildegard, on the 750th anniversary of Hildegard of Bingen’s death, and it shows the elaborate procession in which her relics (her skull, hair, heart, and tongue) are carried through the town in their golden shrine. In addition to the high ecclesiastical dignitaries who attend the feast every year, this particular ceremony also included the former Reich Chancellor Joseph Wirth of the Catholic Center Party among the honored guests.
