Abstract

Otto Dix (1891-1969) was one of the most important artists of the Dada and Neue Sachlichkeit [New Objectivity] movements. Wounded and crippled World War I veterans are a recurring theme in his work. The sight of severely injured war veterans with prostheses was common in the Weimar Republic, and many of them fell into poverty because they were no longer able to work and there were no adequate social services for them. In this painting from 1920, Dix created a highly exaggerated depiction of a scene he had observed in a café.
