The film Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit [Paths to Strength and Beauty] by director Wilhelm Prager was produced by UFA and belongs to the genre of the Kulturfilm [cultural film], a mixture of documentary and feature film that emerged from the propaganda film of the First World War. Cultural films were intended to both entertain and educate their audience, in this case in the pursuit of a healthy and beautiful body. The film contrasts the idealized society of antiquity and its body consciousness with modern urban industrial society. It was based on a screenplay by the physician and film director Dr. Nicholas Kaufmann, who became head of the cultural department at UFA in 1927. The film is an example of the body culture that emerged in the twentieth century, an early form of self-optimization through outdoor exercise in the sun. The film was released in 1925 and quickly became a hit with audiences. Pictured here is a movie poster from 1926.
