Abstract

This 1931 photograph by the press photographer Georg Pahl shows the members of Berlin’s Muslim community in front of their mosque in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. The mosque’s relatively small community—comprised mainly of students, academics, merchants, and intellectuals—was quite diverse in terms of age, gender, and national origin. Many of its members also belonged to Berlin’s German-Islamic Society, founded in 1930, which organized lectures and provided information to the larger public about Islam. On some Muslim holidays, German radio even broadcast the mosque’s services to a larger audience.
