Abstract
Enormous amounts of munitions were used during the First World War. This photograph shows a British soldier standing among a massive pile of spent shell cases near a roadside in France. The shells had been fired at German lines during the German spring offensive of 1918; it was the last large-scale offensive by German troops. The photo was taken by Tom Aitken, a British war photographer.
