Berlin has officially been the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1990, but it was not until 1991 that the city was also declared the seat of the federal government. The move from Bonn to Berlin did not take place until 1999-2000, however, as a new government district first had to be built. This video looks back at the so-called capital debate in the Bundestag in June 1991, in which Berlin only received a narrow majority as the seat of government in the vote. While most federal ministries moved completely to Berlin, some ministries and federal authorities retained a location in Bonn. Contrary to initial fears that many former government buildings in the former capital Bonn would stand empty, they have since found a new use and Bonn has developed into a business location.
