Abstract

Albrecht Dürer’s engraving, The Four Witches (1497), reveals several themes prevalent in early modern images of the witch.  The devil peeks out from around a corner, demonstrating the satanic influence underlying what might otherwise be an innocent gathering of young women. Their nudity reinforces the threat of female sexuality and beauty as a conduit for the devil’s work.  Finally, the witches’ serious expressions and the O.G.H (O Gott hüte/Oh God save us) indicate the sinister threat of the gathering.
