Abstract

In the 1950s, thousands of people left the GDR to resettle in the West. A particularly large number of them were taken in by the refugee camps in West Berlin. In a speech to the Berlin Senate on September 4, 1958, the governing mayor of Berlin, Willy Brandt, commented on the situation. In this program from the Deutschlandradio archive, some of the refugees are then being interviewed about their reasons for leaving the GDR.
