Ludwig Erhard (right), father of the German “Economic Miracle” [Wirtschaftswunder] succeeded Konrad Adenauer in 1963. Erhard’s time as chancellor was controversial. His rivals within the party included Rainer Barzel (left), the deputy chairman of the CDU-CSU parliamentary group. In 1966, amidst the first postwar recession and without the support of his own party, Erhard stepped down after only three years in office. Photo by Klaus Lehnartz.
