Abstract

On February 25, 1932, Hitler was appointed councilor [Regierungsrat] in the state government of Braunschweig. It was a minor post, but the appointment involved the conferral of German citizenship, which made him eligible to run for president. This caricature shows Hitler taking the citizenship oath and swearing to uphold the Weimar Constitution. The constitution is held by its principal author, Hugo Preuß, who is depicted as a Jewish stereotype. Looking down at the scene is Friedrich Ebert, the Social Democrat who served as first Reich President from 1919 until his death in 1925. The caricature, which reveals artist Anton Paul Weber's antisemitic mindset, was published in the illustrated magazine Der Widerstand, a publication advocating National Boshevism in Germany.
