Abstract

This “black list” of resort towns, hotels, and guesthouses in Germany and Austria that were hostile to Jews was published in the Central-Verein-Zeitung, a weekly newspaper published by the Central-Verein deutscher Staatsbürger jüdischen Glaubens [Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish faith]. Founded in 1893, the organization mainly represented assimilated, middle-class Jews in Germany and advocated for their legal and social equality. Its newspaper closely observed the rise of antisemitism in Germany and regularly published lists like this one to warn its readership of businesses and communities that would not welcome them. Many of Germany’s popular resort towns on the coast and in the mountains and many spa towns openly discouraged Jewish vacationers from visiting, as the list shows. Scholars have coined the term “resort antisemitism” for this discriminatory business practice.
