Abstract

Hugo Krayn (1885-1919) was a painter and graphic artist who joined the Berlin Secession in 1915. His works mostly depict Berlin's industrial areas, its working class and its poor. His painting Metropolis thus depicts the darker side of Berlin: billowing smoke, factories, and hurrying workers reflect the impersonal forces of modernity.
