Entitled “Politicking Coachmen,” this caricature is a commentary on the penetration of politics into all levels of German society after universal manhood suffrage was introduced for the Reichstag elections of 1867 and 1871. Even lowly drivers [Kutscher] of horse-drawn carriages [Fiaker] now engaged in political discussions in the workplace or at leisure, often fueled by newspaper articles from the mass press and by alcohol.
