Abstract

This caricature shows a female university student with the attributes of a typical male classmate, including a pipe and student cap. The six-point star on the building behind her is a guild symbol for breweries; it indicates that fresh beer is ready to be served. The suggestion here is that the young woman has just come from the tavern. The caricature dates from 1847, when the matriculation of women at German universities was still unimaginable. Wood engraving.
