Abstract

This segment shows a “high” fashion show in Potsdam, GDR, in 1955. A year later, in 1956, the popular East German fashion magazine Sybille was published for the first time. Clothing industry in the GDR was centralized, and it was often impossible to find and buy stylish clothing in stores. However, many East German women (and men) were skilled tailors, and were known to use Sybille and other sources as inspiration to design and sew their own clothes.
