Abstract

This drawing by Austrian artist Paul Troger depicts the agony of eighteenth-century poverty. Troger (1698-1762) was not primarily known as a portraitist but for his exquisite ceiling paintings. Here, however, we see a quick sketch of a man and a woman begging. Their small, leashed dog, shown with a plaintive look on its face, provides evidence that animal-human relationships were not confined to elite circles or oriented mainly around agricultural need.
