Abstract

Shopping in the GDR’s scarcity economy was not always easy. While the supply of basic daily goods, which tended to be quite cheap, was mostly guaranteed, it was often difficult to get more specialized foods. As a result, GDR citizens were accustomed to waiting in long lines to purchase desired products. This photo shows customers waiting in line to purchase fish in East Berlin.
