Abstract

This image shows women waiting at Berlin’s central employment office, where job seekers could learn about vacant positions. Unemployment rates for women fluctuated according to the economy. They typically worked in labor-intensive industries and could expect to be paid less than men. Often, a woman’s wage was no more than half of a man’s.
